A mostly offroad MTB cycling tour in Roero, a beautiful yet unknown region in the heart of Piedmont featuring a great variety of sceneries: from woods and orchards, to vineyards and steep sandstone slopes. Originally a seabed, Roero divides in two parts, the upper being the wild “Rocche” canyon area and the lower showing hills cultivated by grapes and fruit trees.

Day 1: we meet in the farm house nearby Vezza d’Alba for a quick breafing and the set-up of our MTB bicycles. Today we will be exploring the Gran Sentiero trail, the stunning and wild trekking path which divides the upper Roero from the lower Roero region.
A 15km ride across tertiary roads and country trails through cultivated fields and hills and lead us to the small town of Pocapaglia where the Gran Senteiro begins. The scenery changes immediately: a sandstone trail runs into the forest and on the edge of deep canyons, the so-colled Rocche. A local legend tells that Lucifer itself created them, upon pray of the villagers who wanted to hide from the local tyrann. In exchange for their soul they got the wild Rocche area. At the end of the first sector a small village welcomes us, here we take a stop for a quick lunch in a local Bakery Bar. Left the village we hit again the wooden trails: the dirt track gets a little bumpy in the beginning then it smoothens giving us the opportunity to enjoy the ride at good speed. We cross the highland and reach the town of Monteu Roero, built on the edge of a sandstone cliff. After a quick stop for refreshing in the main square, we take the last part of today’s ride towards Santo Stefano and down to the valley until our farmhouse in Vezza. Tonight we will have dinner in the farmhouse restaurant, enjoying the traditional Roero recipes and wines.
DISTANCE: 41 km
ELEVATION: 610 mt

Day 2: we will spend the day cycling the lower Roero area, along the scenic highland ridge and the Tanaro valley. The route follows easy country trails and b-roads. Just off the farmhouse it starts the Sentiero del Tasso trail, we follow it until we cross the Borbore river and enter the Sentiero del Trifolao, which takes its name from the number of truffles that can found here (the dialect word “trifolao” means truffle hunter). We climb the road to Castagnito to reach the panoramic ridge of Roero, an highland strip which runs above the valley through Arneis vineyards and hilltop villages. A truly scenic route sweetly rolling across. We leave the road and hit a path on the fields leading uphill to the enchanting town of Govone with its Royal Castle, holiday retreat of the Kings of Sardinia since the XVII century. Lunch in a homey trattoria overlooking the vineyards and back on the seat! A quick downhil ride brings to the Tanaro river valley along the flat mills trail crossing corn fields and farms: the bucolic and relaxing landscape befriends us for a good while until the ascent of Guarene. Past the hillock we hit the Pera Madernassa trail and reach an awarded wine maker for a sampling of Roero wines in the cellar. We’re almost arrived, one last uphill and we reach the farm house, end of our Roero tour.
DISTANCE: 44 km
