SUBALPINA GALLERY | THE BEST GELATO SHOPS | THE HISTORIC CAFES | THE GRAND PIAZZAS | THE ROYAL PALACES | PORTA PALATINA ROMAN GATE | PORTA PALAZZO OPEN MARKET | QUADRILATERO DISTRICT | SANTUARIO DELLA CONSOLATA CHURCH | MOLE ANTONELLIANA
We meet in the city centre and quickly reach the site where Torino was founded by Augustus, over 2000 years ago, as a Roman colony- The ruins of the Roman amphitheatre and the prefectly preserved Porta Palatina gate will bring us back to the time of gladiators! Just a stone’s throw is Porta Palazzo, the largest open air maket in Europe, and the Quadrilatero Romano area, which has been the “common people” district for centuries. Narrow cobblestone streets cross each other at right angles forming a perfect chessboard. Chiesa della Consolata church, the Basilica most beloved by the Turinese inhabitants is our next stop: the complex is an amazing piece of religious architecture, featuring colored marbles, giant pillars and Rococo decorations. The church gallery hosts a collection of 13.000 “Ex-Voto” artworks, donated by the worshippers as a token of thanks for blessing.
We move towards the Royal district through the cosy Piazza Palazzo di Città, seat of the City Hall, until we reach the XVIII century Baroque heart of the city, the most notable of Torino’s areas, adorned with noble Baroque-style palaces and piazzas. Palazzo Carignano, Palazzo Reale, Piazza Castello, Piazza San Carlo: stunning architectures shows the power of the Savoy Family who ruled Torino for centuries. We will unveil some stories and secrets about that periods while admiring the majestic facades and porticoes. We now cross the courtyard of first Italian Parliament and walk into the elegant Galleria Subalpina: our favourite Gelato shop is just round the corner. How can we resist…
We now take the scenic Via Po street to reach our final destination, the symbol monument of Torino, the imposing 167 metres-high Mole Antonelliana: standing at its feet and looking above to the top will definitely be a gripping experience.
